A doctors coat birthday cake for a very special 21st

August 12, 2012

My boss at work’s daughter was turning 21 and we got talking about cake ideas for her.  She is training to be a doctor and has one very proud dad, so this was the theme we went with.  I did a bit of google research and found some ideas for doctors coats, scrubs and other medical themed cakes.  We picked out our favourite bits of each cake and put together a plan.

It was a chocolate sponge cake with chocolate frosting in the shape of a doctors coat, although I have been told doctors don’t actually wear these coats when on ward, I must check this with Lorraine!

The cake was shaped into a coat and as we had quite a big cake I went with a long coat style.  The cake was decorated with a pink stethoscope and blouse and a name badge with the birthday message written on.

I decided the cake would not look right with ribbon round the bottom so I continued the piping with glace icing and piped round the edge.  I think I may now be on board with this.

It is simple to make: 2 cups of icing sugar mixed with a teaspoon of melted butter and 4 tablespoons of hot water.

(sorry I am using cups it is just the way I do it! I think it is about 8oz!)

Mix all the ingredients together to make a thick paste, then heat over a pan of boiling water until it becomes spreadable.  Don’t be afraid to add a little more water if it seems too thick.

Once it cools it sets harder so if you are using it in stages keep it warm and re-heat a little if it starts to set. It colours really easily and pipes fab using small, wax paper piping bags.

Happy Birthday Nicola, hope you had a fantastic 21st.
